Inheritance

 

In my family I felt like I never 

Done anything to earn my parent's love 

Or for what they did for me .

My dad once said ,

You nor I have not done anything 

To deserve to be a part of God's family either .

Remember , God chose us all to be holy

And blameless in His sight ,

Or to stand without blemish before Him .

This is only possible through Jesus , 

In whom we have redemption 

Through his blood , forgiveness of sins ,

In accordance with the riches of God's grace .

We do not have to earn  God's grace ,

Forgiveness or entrance into His family .

We simple accept His free gift my boy .

The Beginning

If at the beginning of your life's story 

Feels messed up ,

To renew you and recovery your identity .

Cleaning

If we did not wash our dishes or cloths 

Or hands or never dusted or emptied the garbage 

What a dismal odorous home we would have .

There is great value in doing some spiritual cleaning 

By decluttering the mind that is stuffed with distracting 

Activities ,

Divesting from unworthy habits ,

Shoring up the foundation of prayer 

And getting rid of emotional debris .

Remember , Lent is here .

Time to begin an extensive inner 

House cleaning OK .

Lie Down And Sleep

When I walk through the darkest valley ,

I will not be afraid 

For You are close beside me .

Your rod and your staff protect 

And comfort me .

In peace I will lie down and sleep 

For You alone O Lord , make me

Dwell in safety .

When you cross deep rivers ,

I will be with you and you will not drown .

When you walk through fire 

You will not be burned or scorched

The Sadness

I wiped away my tears 

In an attempt to appear strong .

A friend passed me by 

And must have noticed 

My puffy red eyes 

The friend stopped 

And quickly said ,

I think you need a hug .

He gave me a hug

And together we shed 

Some more tears .

His compassion showed me 

It was OK to cry .

I learned that being strong

In the wake of tragedy 

Does not require hiding our sadness .

As Christain we know that even in the midst 

Of the assurance that death is not the end 

As we struggle through times of grief .

The promise given to us through the death 

And resurrection of  Jesus Christ strengthens us ,

Gives us hope and enable us to persevere .

Oh To Listen

I was eating lunch downtown 

I noticed a young soldier a few tables away .

I walked over to thank him for his service        

To our county .

I asked where he was headed ,

Hoping to hear , I am going home 

But he answered  ,

I am on my way to build hospitals 

In New York .

Then I noticed several people getting 

Ready to board a plane ,

I realized that any of those people 

Might be headed to a war zone 

Of their own .

They could be facing V 19 ,

Dreading a visit to the doctor ,

Caring for ageing parents ,

And worried about their jobs .

What would it be like 

To ask genuinely about 

Where others are headed 

And then listen to their answers  .

Oh listen please  .

Compassion For All

The world today is so full of trouble 

And hurting people .

Who needs the Savior's gentle for care ?

Like a shepherd who leads , protect 

And cares for his sheep ,

Jesus extends His compassion to all 

Who come to Him .

No matter where we are in life 

And what we are expecting ,

In Him we find a heart overflowing 

With care and tenderness .

Remember , when we have been 

A  beneficiary of God's loving compassion ,

We can not help but want to extend 

It to others .

Father amid the distraction 

I will face today .

God's Way

God's ways are different than ours .

And if we had them we would take them 

But God chose to supply our needs

He Delivers

Jesus , delivers us from fear .

Fear not , little flock .

From anxiety trust in God ,

Trust also in me .

From self preoccupation

From a poor self image 

You are worth more

A simple prayer of thanks giving 

For the blessings of our life

Thanks giving to God must not be restricted

One Morning

One morning I awoke from a dream 

With a sense of peace .

I remember being in a darkness

But surrounded by hundred of flickering lights .

I felt such calm and comfort 

That my sleepy mind 

Began to praise God 

Then it came to me that the lights 

Represented all those who were praying 

For me during this difficult time .

I try to remember God may speak 

To me and you in the same way .

We may sometime miss out because 

The message is not delivered in the way we expect .

The closer our relationship to God ,

Sharing time spent talking and listening .

The easiest  is to hear God 

Even if God speaks to us in ways

Thankfully God , the quilter 

Of our lives ,

Will start a good work in us 

And will complete the job no matter

How uninteresting we are

You know that when you shift the focus

At a very low point in my life ,

I heard these softly spoken words .

God has a special name for you and me

He calls us his little lamb 

And he will pick you and I up 

And carry you and I on our bad days .

God knows each of this by name 

And Jesus' word will reveal the truth .

I know my sheep and my sheep know me .

Jesus's Love

How deep is our love ?

Does our love transcend fairness ?

Does our love refuse to reduce 

Individuals to the wrongs 

They have done ?

Is our love expansive enough 

To include even those

Who have injured

God Is With You

He will take up our pain

Holding Hands

Walking in step with Christ ,

We may feel like a child 

Holding the hand of a loving parent 

On a busy side walk .

We are not sure where we are going ,

But our trust is cheery .

We are open to surprises 

And move at a happy and hopeful pace .

God does not grip us to tightly .

We are all free

To make our own choices .

When distracted by temptations 

Along the way ,

We may let go of Jesus' hand 

But God never abandons us .

Sadness And Love

I have missed my loved ones so much ,

I have learned that Jesus suffers with us 

And the Holy Spirit provides us comfort .

During those times when I cry out in pain and hurt ,

Jesus shields me and protects me 

From dwelling on the bad .

Wisdom has been passed on to me 

Through this loss as I learn 

A new normal for a life

Suffering

When you are suffering and in need ,

He will come to your rescue .

Sometimes all discipline seems painful 

Rather than pleasant ,

But later it yields the peaceful 

Fruit of righteousness 

To those who have been trained by it .

Yes we can rejoice when we run 

Into problems and trials ,

For we know that they help us 

Develop endurance .

Endurance develops strength of character 

And character strengths our confident 

Hope of salvation .

Father Your Word contains story 

After story of humans freed from bondage .

I thank you for the grace that frees me 

And allows me to thrive .

God will lead with human kindness ,

With ropes of hope and love ,

He will lift the yoke from your neck 

And bend down and feed you .

God's grace is not a lasso looped

Around your shoulders

Trapping you and binding you tightly 

Instead grace reaches out 

To you through the kindness of others .

Often our patience wear thin ,

Did you know if you make the Lord your refuge ,

If you make the most High your shelter ,

No evil will conquer you ,

No plague will come near your home .

He will order his angels to protect

What Is Changing

Our world is changing every day .

I looked back 50 years ago .

The changes since then are mind bogging .

There were no cell phones ,

No computers , no Netflix ,

No smart cars .

I often wonder how we all 

Survived it all .

Cloths have changed ,

I have the same old shoes !

The food has changed 

And sadly our beliefs

About God have also changed .

Church membership has declined .

Our priorities about worshiping 

God have also changed .

Jesus Christ however is unchanging .

His love for us remain the same .

His grace , mercy and forgiveness

Jesus says to us ,

On A Drive

                

When I go for a drive 

Out in the country to just get away .

I take in all that is around me 

The horses , the birds in the sky 

And so much natural beauty .

I have never felt so content 

In the midst of so much uncertainty

While driving , I realized 

How often the stresses 

And worries of everyday life

God's Strong Love

The greater our love ,

The greater our burden of care .

God is love

There Is No Shame

I hope and pray the almighty

I 'm Fine

(A Poem Grandma used to read)

There's nothing whatever the natter with me .

I'm  just as healthy as I can be .

I have arthritis in both knees 

And when I walk , I talk with a wheeze .

My pulse is weak and my blood is thin ,

But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in .

I think my liver is out of whack 

And a terrible pain in my back .

My hearing is poor , my sight is dim ,

Most everything seems to be out of trim ,

But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in .

I have arch support for both my feet ,

Or I wouldn't be able to go on the street .

Sleeplessness I I have night after night ,

And in the morning I'm just a sight .

My memory is failing , my head's in a spin .

I'm peacefully living on aspirin .

But I'm awfully well for the the shape I'm in .

The moral is , as this tale we unfold ,

That for you and me who are growing old ,

It is better to say ,"I'm fine " with a grin 

Than to let them know the shape we're in .

The Fruit

Spring is coming .

Jesus reminds us that he is the true vine 

And that God cuts the unfruitful branches from them .

Sometimes out of laziness , habit or fear of change ,

I stay in a rut that keeps me from following God's will .

It is not easy to change behavior ,

Step away from a situation 

Or move in a new direction .

But sometimes God redirect my path 

And ask me to change what I am doing 

In order to serve better and produce more fruit .

God wants me to snip away

The dead branches in my life 

To encourage new growth .

I feel the Holy Spirit nudging me 

To make the needed changes 

In my life so that I can produce 

Fruit for God .

I Love You Big Guy

My grandson waved good bye 

Then turned back with a question .

Grandpa why do you stand on the ramp 

And watch until we leave ?

I smiled at him .

Finding his question cute 

Because he is so young .

Seeing his concern ,

However , I tried 

To give a good answer .

Well it is a courtesy , I told him .

If you are my guest ,

Watching until you leave 

Shows I care .

He weighed my answer ,

But still looked perplexed 

So I told him the simple truth .

I watch I said because I love you .

When I see your car drive away ,

I know you are safely heading home .

He smiled giving me a big hug .

Finally he understood .

My Grandson

When my grandson is heartbroken ,

I can hear my grandma telling me 

When your grandson is not up to par 

And feeling so unhappy 

Always listen to him 

And tell him God knows

All about it .

I wonder ,

How will that be comforting ?

Then it occurred to me 

That God is not simply 

Aware of the events 

In our lives .

He compassionately 

Sees into our souls 

And knows how they affect us .

He understands that little things 

Can feel like big things depending 

On our age , past wounds

Or lack of resources .

Patient

I am not a particularly patient person .

You all know I like to go fishing .

While patience does not always 

Come easy to me ,

I know patience is key to listening

Both to others and to God .

Every morning I set aside time 

To listen patiently to God 

Before the concerns of the day hit me .

Fishing reminds me that patience 

And stillness are a good way to fish 

For what God wants me to hear today 

But true successful fishing 

Also encourages me to look around actively 

And seek God's wisdom .

It Triggers

Our souls have trigger food 

Like gossiping about a neighbor ,

Lying to a family member ,

Envying that coworker

For his promotion .

We get a headache 

As we let evil thoughts worm 

Their way out .

But make no mistake ,

The damage is real

And harder to repair .

The more we indulge .

Today let us focus 

Not only on what we 

Are putting into our bodies 

But also on what we

let out of our hearts .

Soar Like An Eagle

I saw an eagle perched a top a hay stack .

As it flew away buoyed by the strong S.D. wind 

Beneath its massive outreached wings ,

It lifted to great heights and flew away .

Living a Christian life like I am 

Is much like soaring .

We are not to live by our strength alone 

But are to be carried along 

By the uplifting of the Holy Spirit .

At times we grow weary 

But God's power never diminishes .

How To Pray

One day when my grandson was praying 

I let him pray in his own words .

He prayed for many things 

And it all came from his heart .

His last words were Jesus ,

I am happy with you . Amen .

I was amazed what a simple way 

To express gratitude to Jesus .

You know as I grow older 

I tend to focus to much 

On praying the right way .

Oh to speak my prayers ,

So that they will sound correct 

To who may hear them .

I know God Sees my heart 

Not the complexity of my sentences .

I need God in my life every day ,

So I decided that when I first wake up 

And I am still lying in bed ,

I would greet God .

Many times I thank God for a good night's sleep .

Sometimes I complain a little 

If it was not a good night .

God becomes more important

Contentment is not natural it is learned .

Moving on to the next thing 

The minute we realize would not .

Other times our discontent takes 

The form of anxiously shielding 

Ourselves from any 

And all suspected threats .

But sometimes it takes experiencing 

What we would fear 

The most in order to stumble into joy .

Having experiences much of the worst 

Life has to offer .

Oh the true secret of true contentment .

The mysterious reality that as we lift up to God 

Our longing for wholeness , 

We experience unexplainable peace .

By caring even deeper into the depths 

Of Christ power , beauty and grace .

Peace In Our Hearts

We often keep stashed away in our hearts ,

Things that have brought us great unhappiness 

Like anxiety is hidden ,

But easily retrieved .

The anger that is below the surface ,

But ready to strike .

Resentment is like silently corroding 

The core of our thoughts .

We should encourage the people always 

Rejoice , to be gentle 

And to bring everything to God in prayer .

It is possible to push out dark thoughts 

And allow the peace of God to guard our hearts 

And minds in Christ Jesus .

It is when the thoughts that fill up our minds are true  ,

Noble , right , pure , lovely , admirable and praise worthy 

That we keep His peace in our hearts .
