The Size Of God's Power

The idea of a huge faith is intimidating .

We wonder , how can I possibly 

Have faith big enough for this and that ?

Jesus tells us if you have faith 

As small as a mustard seed ,

You can say to the mountain ,

Move from here to there 

And it will move .

Nothing will be impossible for you .

It is never the size of our faith 

But rather the size of God's power .

In any situation Jesus will hear 

Us when we cry out to Him

And do not forget to pray .

What A Day

You tell me you are my strength .

You plan out each day 

And have it ready for me 

Long before I get up and out of bed in the morning 

And also provide the strength I need 

For each step of the way each day .

I should not asses my energy 

Level and wonder about what is on the road ahead .

In touch with you .

Your power freely flows into me

Through our open communications .

When things are not going well

Always return to your God

The lord is good to those

I used to feel pressured by time constraints

And I would drive hurriedly 

Trying to beat traffic lights or pass other drivers .

One day when things were not going my way 

And everything seemed to be frustrating 

With my attempts to save time  ,

A thought came to me .

My time is in God's hands .

I relaxed and drove more slowly 

And considerately !

Surprisingly , I arrived on time .

The Bible invites me to continue

To give out the best in the work I do 

And that God entrust to me .

Maybe others , consider my work trivial .

I may see it as a small job 

That produces little 

And I may not often see 

The fruits of my work .

The good that I share in the world 

As a follower of Christ 

Has no doubt produced much fruit 

Even if I am unaware of it .

One good deed that I do today 

Can have an impact later on .

Therefore when I continue 

To sow the seeds of God's goodness ,

God will grow them 

And in time they will bear fruit 

In the lives of God's people .

Burning Love

     

There are times in life when we feel 

Like we are in a fire ,

Everything we thought we knew 

Or everything we thought  would last forever ,

Is suddenly going up in flames ,

We perceive problems .

We perceive abandonment .

Fire differently ,

What if we could wrap our hands

And hearts around the idea 

That we are not being burned

In this sin filled world ,

When you are hurting

A Badge

Each believer has a badge of faith to wear .

Jesus encourages us to pin it on every morning 

And let it shine all day and night 

Through our words and deeds .

We may back away from publicly living

Out our faith for fear of ridicule , rejection 

Or even persecution .

When and if we choose to hide our badge ,

We know that our merciful Lord is waiting 

To shine it back up , pin it back on 

And send us back into working to help others .

The Hands Of God

When I give time to God 

In the morning when I pray 

I find that God seems to stretch my time ,

And I get things done more easily .

At my age I never miss praying 

And with less effort than on the days

When I did not pray .

At my age my time is truly in God's hands ,

We often unexpectedly bump up

Against rocks and a hard place ,

Then our faith is tested 

And we are afraid .

We can not change mistakes 

Of the past ,

And we are paralyzed with fear 

Of what lies ahead .

Beside You Always

When we love someone ,we keep vigil .

We resist sleep and wait up 

Until our children's car pulls 

Into the drive way safely .

We accompany a friend to a doctor's 

Office when the diagnosis 

He might hear is uncertain .

We share the anticipation of a neighbor 

Awaiting news of joy and hope of a new baby .

In our own loving and limited ways .

We reveal that every moment 

Of our lives the good and the bad 

God remains with us as a loving presence .

Our God guards our coming and our going 

In the way of peace .

So we know what to do always 

And that is love .

To Hug

When someone has lost someone

And you want to console them 

To help them face their fierce 

Anguish and unimaginable lose .

You go see them .

You pray for wisdom 

And you rehearse your condolence .

But when you get to your friend's home 

And see the numb and grief stricken face 

You simply begin to weep and hold out your arms 

To embrace his grief .

Sometimes the presence of God's love

Can best be expressed in a shared hug

To Serve Others

I have no retirement saving plan .

I only have dreams of saving money .

Now at my age 

I have asked myself  ,

How can I invest in my Christianity 

And lead a life of faith 

Like my mom and grandmas and grandpa

I daily set aside time praying .

I try to act justly 

And to love others .

At my age 

I believe that investing 

My actions in this way 

Will help to sustain my 

Relationship with God 

And my service to others .

Only God can evaluate my action 

And judge the return on my investment .

If I want to be like Christ 

And like my loved ones 

Then this way I will invest 

In ways that serve others .

Be Thankful

It is easy to be thankful 

When life is good .

Many times we feel pride 

And believe we caused

Our own good fortune .

But when thins go badly 

We often blame God 

For the misfortune .

When bad things happen 

We do not know what plan

God is working on in our lives 

We know God is good

Have you ever felt like 

you are playing hide and go seek

With God and you are it ?

The trials and temptation of life 

Hit you hard and you search for God ,

But He seems to have gone into hiding .

Circumstances do not change .

God knows right where you are .

He never hides from you .

He will go into your battles before you .

He will not leave you or forsake you .

Measure Up

We all have a yard stick or measuring tape .

I think the evil people give them away 

And are delighted to see them used .

Those people who leave Mass immediately 

After the Eucharist 

And those people who live in a nice part of town ,

Those who make more money ,

Comparing how we measure up to others 

Can make us feel smug and self satisfied 

Or depressed , envious and hopeless .

Remember , God's measurement 

When it comes to our eternal 

Disposition is not about how much better

Or worse we live our lives 

Versus our neighbors .

It is more about how well

We love and serve our neighbors .

A Quiet Life

When you ask a child 

What they want to be 

When they grow up ?

I want to live a quiet life .

I try to mind my own business 

And work with my hands .

So outsiders respect me

But maybe we could encourage

Gratitude is a funny thing .

Ask , Seek , Knock  !

Asking is the heartfelt words ,

Seeking is looking to see 

How the Lord is showing us 

The answer  .

We may be blinded to it ,

Knocking is a definitive action .

God wants us to do something this this request .

When we pray for peace on earth ,

Is there someone in our family we must forgive ?

A Toddler

There is nothing like a toddler 

In the middle of a temper tantrum .

It is not a  pretty sight ,

That cute face turns Nebraska red with rage 

The screaming pierce the South Dakota cool air 

And the eardrum !

Those angry limbs kick up a storm 

When that little one 

Wanted something and does not get it ,

Of course as adults we know 

Better than to throw a tantrum

When we do not get our way

Love Freely

God loves us even when we reject Him .

He draws us to himself ,

Even when we do not respond .

He is with us ,

Even when we are not aware of him .

That is what grace is .

It is the sorrow God plants in our hearts 

When we sin .

It is the desire He gives us for healing .

Grace is God's tireless offer to fill

Our emptiness .

His tender urging that we drop our hands

And open our arms to him .

It is God loving us freely .

Remember , when you start looking 

At people's hearts

You will not change your behavior

You must want to stop

More than you want to breath .

Stop the denial and be honest

At some level you do not what to change .

Your drinking brings you pleasure ,

Sex may become your medication 

For a deeper pain within .

A medication you fear 

You can not live without .

The Master Gardener

God is the gardener who cuts off every branch 

That fails to bear fruit .

God does prunes fruitful branches 

To produce great yields .

I considered how my spiritual life 

Needs pruning to honor God more effectively 

For example ,simply repeating 

The same actions or words may stifle effective witnessing 

Or hinder my prayer life ,

Bible reading without meditating or seeking God's guidance 

May become meaningless .

Busyness may replace more urgent Christian service .

I need to remember God prunes all of us in different ways 

To draw out attention back to our faith .

When God cuts off old habits 

And refreshes our commitment 

To prayer .

With some Bible study and service we will produce 

More abundant fruit for the kingdom .

Perseverance

Hanging in there 

The Bible calls it perseverance .

It is not possible through mere willpower .

We persevere because God provided over and over ,

He is with us ,

He will give us strength 

And that He will accomplish 

His purpose in our lives .

Do not be dismayed 

For He is our God .

He will strengthen us and help us .

He will uphold us with his right hand .

To hang in there is knowing God's goodness 

Allows us to release our grip on fear 

So we can cling to the Father 

And his promise that He will provide

Who is your neighbor 

Most of us think of our neighbor 

As the people who live next door .

According to Jesus ,

Our neighbor is anyone we meet 

Who is in need 

And whom we can help ,

No matter how dissimilar 

We are as we show kindness to those

We demonstrate our love for God .

Let us not love with words or speech 

But with action and in truth .

Remember , God's love gives us all 

Everything we need .

We get weary

Our faith gets weak

We keep our faith in Him

Nothing can separate us from God's love in Christ .

Not death or life ,

Not angels or rulers ,

No present things

Or future things .

God assures this scriptural truth ,

God did not say that nothing 

Bad would ever happen .

Not even the tragic and untimely 

Death of a loved one .

When we realize God is always with us ,

We can lay out our true feelings

Comparing ourselves with others 

Is a sure recipe for unhappiness .

The best remedy for unhealthy comparison 

Is when our minds are focused on God 

And all He has done for us ,

Self focus thoughts fall gently away

There are times however when I do need 

To be alone ,

To recharge my batteries and collect my thoughts .

I need time alone to talk to people 

Who do not talk back to me in any way any more

And I truly wish I could just one more time hear them .

I know God will not leave me or forsake me either

Play Or Dance To Your Music

Your favorite music will come on the radio .

You hear the opening notes 

And your brain releases dopamine

It will make you feel happy and hopeful .

Science has proven what music lovers

Already know .

Music has a powerful effect 

On your brain .

Research has shown that playing 

And listening and dancing to the music 

Can boost immunity to diseases ,

Reduce stress ,

Repairing brain damage .

Alzheimer's patients and people who are struggling 

With depression and so much much more

Can not wait to hear their music 

For it makes them feel special

And help them remember their memories

With their loved ones dancing to their music .

Me And The Horse

A wise person told me to take one day at a time .

Another wise person told me 

You know what to to 

But today I will tell people I am fine

God Has Promised

God has promised a safe landing 

But not always smooth sailing .

It is fine to pray 

For smooth sailing through life ,

Hoping to avoid excessive pain ,

Suffering and grief .

To expect the Christian life to be easy 

However is to misunderstand 

The kingdom of God and Jesus Himself .

Whining

Complain complain when you get down 

To grumbling about most anything 

You are voicing a complaint 

Need not to be harmful .

It is actually psychologically healthy 

To let off some steam .

If we do not do this 

Resentment and crankiness eventually

Develops when the same complaints keep being voiced ,

They turn into whining .

That is when our spiritual life takes a dive .

We lose perspective and begin blaming 

And verbally attacking others !

You forget that God guides our life 

And you become consumed 

With grumbling and that is whining !

Be Content

I prayed to God to help me 

Be more grateful for what I already have ,

Instead of fixating on what I lack .

I went and prepared a soup .

I could smell the soup's delicious aroma 

And my stomach even growled in anticipation .

I was thankful , that I had the soup to satisfy my hunger .

At that moment joy flooded my soul 

And I prayed ,Lord thank you for the soup

And for answering my prayer for gratitude .

I can sense God's pleasure 

That I appreciate the gifts 

That I have been given .

I then realized that God 

Has given me all I need 

And always would ,

I was content .

I am reminded of times

In my life

Do you care for the other man

Jesus does reach out to people one by one .

Everyone has certain responsibilities

An Angel

Most of us have wondered

Do angels really exist ?

We can not prove that they do 

Or that they do not .

But most of us can point to

A curious sense of calm comes over us

This sense that all would be well likely 

Came not from within us 

But from beyond us .

Rebuilding is often difficult 

And time consuming 

Whether we are rebuilding 

A home , a neighborhood ,

He can use us in big and small ways 

To accomplish His will on earth .

I come into your room

Her eyes no longer had the sparkle in them .

I could see the sparrow

As I looked over her she looked up

I think our love brought her back one more time

It broke my heart .

Waiting reminds me 

That waiting is part 

Of our life with God .

Sometimes the wait 

Seems uncomfortable

Or unbearable ,

But God promised to listen 

When I call out .

When I spend time 

Waiting in anticipation 

Of the fulfillment of God's promise ,

The delay becomes an act of praise .

When I feel God has not moved

According to my preferred time frame ,

I can explore ways to use this time that is mine 

To grow into a stronger and more trusting 

Relationship with God .

The Insight

Sometimes I consider 

What it means to grow 

As a follower of Jesus .

I have learned the secret 

Of being content 

In any and every situation 

Over the years .

Personal peace did not happen 

Over night .

It is something I grew into me 

Over time .

I can do all this through God 

Who gives me strength .

Life has its challenges 

But as I turn to the One 

Who has overcome the world .

I discovered not only that He is faithful

He can get me through it all

And that nothing matters 

More than the closeness to Him .

He gives me His peace 

And helps me to trust 

And empowers me to go 

The distance as I run or walk 

With Him .

Your Value

We may feel that society 

Gives us a value based on our 

Social status , income level or appearance .

God values us as beloved children 

From whom Jesus Christ lived , died and raised again .

God is the supreme collector 

Who seeks to gather all of us 

Into the kingdom of compassion , peace and justice .

When we accept and treat others 

As people of intrinsic worth 

Who are endowed with dignity ,

The kingdom of God draws a bit closer .

The lives of others are blessed 

And by the grace of God so is ours .

At The Diner

With close friends in the little diner

At the edge of town 

Where we like to meet to share 

Our lives and we talk of the conflict 

And scandal involving those in authority 

All over the world .

Instead of vending our frustration and our fears ,

We join hands and pray 

For those in authority 

We make special petitions 

And we chose some aspects of leaders 

For which we could give thanks .

With pancakes and coffee and green tea 

We are surprised at how much more tranquil 

Our conversation became .

To Be Noticed

My family taught me 

That God created and cherishes

Each and every one of us .

We are each special 

In our own way 

And we should love one another

Regardless of what we look like .

We are all children of God .

They tell me just when you think 

You are falling apart 

God is there for you .

A Fall Morning

As I sit out back and the sun is up 

I sit in my chair and try to think of happy memories .

I can not smile real loud this morning .

I see a family of ants craw by my 1 shoe lace 

And I think about my uncle who would say

Just sit and watch them go .

Another uncle would say do not forget to lead 

The pheasant in this South Dakota wind that blows .

they both would tell be do not say wo wo  !

I looked again down onto the patio 

I see a night crawler so blue 

He could not move .

The South Dakota wind will dry my tears .

For a while I will just sit here 

And hope and pray for a nice family hunt 

And more happy memories  .

I will say no more this morning 

Because my heart wants to tell more on me !

He Does Not Wait

Jesus does not wait for the sick 

Ones to come to him .

You do not have to call for an appointment ,

Wait on hold , or show insurance cards 

Before Jesus will see you .

If you keep your eyes and ears open , 

You can notice Jesus on your doorstep every day .

He is eager to come into your life 

And spend time with you .

Time spent with Jesus turns 

Sickness to health and old ways 

Into new possibilities .

Sometimes

We can sometimes view ourselves 

Only as we have been with all our failures 

And shortcomings .

But God sees us as new creations ,

Not who we were but who we are 

In Jesus and who we are becoming 

Through the power of the Holy Spirit .

Oh God teach us to view ourselves 

And others in this way always .

Upright Lives

The salvation of the righteous 

Comes from the Lord .

The Lord God is kind d merciful ,

And if you turn back to Him ,

He will no longer turn His back on you .

The way of the Lord is a stronghold 

To those with integrity ,

But it destroys the wicked ,

The Lord's mercy does not depend 

Upon believers  works ,

But He fulfills the promise of salvation 

For those who respond to His call 

With upright lives .

Walk With Integrity

To walk with integrity 

Points to the needs 

For integrity in our relationship with God 

And with each other .

That is , in fact , how Jesus 

Summed up what is required of us .

Oh to love God with all our hearts ,

Souls and minds to love our 

Neighbor as ourselves .
